"Politically, the idea of India must exist on two levels – at least. Here I should first clarify an elementary point. My old essay ‘the imaginary institution of India’ was misunderstood by several eminent historians as suggesting that no idea of India ever existed before the arrival of British colonial unification of the subcontinent into a single state. I was then actually thinking about India as a political idea: an idea related, crucially, to the questions of the state and its possibilities.
In premodern times, it seems there was a clear idea of India as a cultural space which was ‘united’ by recognizable circuits of practices and transactions – religious practice, arts, literature and crafts. It is important to emphasize the transactional side of these adjacent and overlapping social practices – because these practices were not identical, but each recognized the adjacent existence of the others. They did see that the others were different and distinct from themselves but did not see them as a violation of common rules of social existence.
Religious diversity in India ought, in my view, to be seen in this way: not always as a moral practice of ‘high toleration’, but as a sociological adjacency that had to be simply presupposed in the texture of life. Internal differences within Hinduism – between Shaivas, Vaishnavas, Shaktas, and their differences with Jainas and Buddhists should be viewed this way, rather than through an unpractical high-minded philosophy of toleration. Attention to philosophical disputes among even Hindu theological paths show the sharpness of the disputations, which should not be anachronistically and casually emulsified as ‘toleration’ ."
