Ah, Leo Strauss. He wrote in the 1930s about the effect of Nietzsche. Yes, Nietzsche had shown us that the ground beneath our feet was gone--he himself participated in its destruction. Loss of stability, position, authority. Call that "socially bad"...but intellectually good. AI is having a similar effect.

"The tradition has been shaken at its roots by Nietzsche. It has altogether forfeited its self-evidence. We stand in the world completely without authority, completely without orientation. Only now has the question [how to live / pos bioteon] regained its full sharpness. We can again pose it. We have the possibility of posing it in full seriousness. We can no longer read Plato’s dialogues superficially, in order to notice admiringly that old Plato already knew this and that; we can no longer polemicize against him superficially. And the same with the Bible: we no longer think without evidence that the prophets were in the right; we ask ourselves seriously whether it was not the kings who were in the right. We really must begin entirely from the beginning." -Leo Strauss

Indra owns nearly a quarter of the Rigveda. Iran ended up listing him among the demons. The Purāṇas made his kingship a temporary post. The Pali canon has him climbing down from his chariot to bow to a man while his own driver watches. Three religions demoted the same god, and the reason was cattle. New essay: Link in comments. Vedic Meditation अपरोक्ष: the Direct

What is the only thing that is direct? Everything else comes through a medium

The world comes through the senses. Our knowledge is all full of words and labels but these words are not the real thing. What is the only thing we know without a screen or through a prism?

It is something entirely mysterious, not definable by the mind. Yet, it is here always, it is not indirect अपरोक्ष:

We have talked about this strange consciousness being indestructible अव्यय: and अविषय: not an object

Now let us look at this strange reality that is always here, direct, face to face, the only thing we truly know, burning quietly in our heart

Why does every generation assume the future will be more civilised than the past? John Gray argues this belief in progress is both false and dangerous: a secular myth that blinds us to the recurring conflicts of history. In this interview with Jonny Thomson, he explains why science and technology accumulate but gains in ethics and politics are fragile, unwinding every few generations. He warns that we cannot assume the future is destined to be better than the past. Tap here to watch the full interview. iai.tv/video/the-idea

Is the tide turning? First, a resignation in the wake of the Jantar Mantar protests. Now, @PrashantKishor breaches the #BJP’s long-held Bankipur bastion with a remarkable victory. One result does not make a revolution. But sometimes small cracks tell us that something underneath is shifting. Is India asking for a new grammar of politics? Are achhe din finally ahead?
