The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Tyaktena in Isha 1
Tyaktena can have two meanings:
1) It can mean through or by renunciation or in the spirit of detachment
2) It can mean through that which is given or allotted to you (by God)
Sankara and Sri Aurobindo took the first sense. Ramanujacharya took the second
Both are meaningful. The first one captures the essence of the Isha to which the second sense is an enhancement
One can see how one shloka that seems straightforward at first look becomes multilayered and polygonal in a wider interpretation. This makes the Isha a profound meditation and a constantly fresh experience

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Bhunjita in Isha 1
Bhunjita may have two meanings. It may mean to protect or to govern. But it may also mean to enjoy, eat, consume or experience
Sankara takes it in the first sense. Sri Aurobindo takes it in the second.
In the second sense, the meaning gives us one of the greatest insights of the Isha. To enjoy by the renouncing in and through Isha
MK Gandhi considered the the first shloka of the Isha Upanishad as the most important statement of Sanatana Dharma
We see the multiverse of the Upanishads expressed in the various alankaras of poetry and how they enhance and deepen our understanding

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Gridha in Isha 1
Gridh- means greed and the listener is advised not to covet
Gridh is also related to the Sanskrit word gridhra which means a vulture. This is a brilliant use of a verb suggesting by association the nature of greed
Grdh- interestingly may also be related to the English word greed
Any other word for desiring, wanting or coveting would not have been as effective. The sound of gridh- too with the deployment of the vocal cords in ga- (ghoshavat) and the dha- sound which requires a strong exhalation (mahaprana) is perfect for this feeling of ravenous degenerate seeking.
When a perfect word is used in Sanskrit it is called suvakta or sukta or yathartha shabda

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Alankaras in Isha 1
We have seen how many figures of speech there are in just two lines of the first shloka
Let us recap:
1) Polyptoton: seen in jagatyam Jagat
2) Roopak: Isha residing in everything
3) Shlesha: seen with vasyam, tyaktena, bhunjita
4) Paradox or virodhabhasa: to enjoy while renouncing
5) Anuprasa or alliteration: seen with jagatyam Jagat or ten tyaktena
6) Rhetorical question or prashna alankara: kasya svit dhanam
7) Internal rhyme
But the key is the affirmation of life and existence. That is established with the first pada

The decisive criterion is whether an organisation’s or cult’s foundational doctrines and practices implicitly or explicitly affirm the foundational Hindu metaphysical first principles based on Veda and remain substantially within Hindu religious framework.
On that criterion, Sri Aurobindo, Arya Samaj, etc are within Hindu fold.

Varanasi: From the sacred land of Kashi, former CBI Director M Nageshwar Rao announced a new chapter in his public life, unveiling his new political role as the National President of the Sarvajana Sanatan Party (SSP)
Referring to his experience working in the fields of security, law and order, and administration in India for nearly four decades, M. Nageshwar Rao stated that India's reconstruction cannot be limited to administrative reforms alone.
According to him, India needs to move forward towards modern development while remaining true to its civilizational roots.
He clarified that in the Sarvajana Sanatan Party's vision, Sanatan is not merely a method of worship, but a life-view rooted in truth, dharma, duty, compassion, justice, self-control, nature, family, society, and public welfare.
The Sarvajan Sanatan Party's vision is based on four key pillars:
Education - A connection to Indian civilisation, history, and knowledge traditions with modern and global-level education;
Health - Quality and accessible healthcare for all, combining knowledge from modern medicine and Indian health traditions;
Livelihood - A respectable livelihood and opportunities for youth, farmers, artisans, labourers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs;
Civilizational Reconnection - Viewing India's languages, arts, temples, pilgrimage sites, festivals, knowledge traditions, family, and cultural institutions as the nation's strength.
The party stated that its objective is not to return to the past, but to build a modern India by standing on its civilizational roots-an India that is technologically and economically modern, yet not disconnected from its cultural identity.
M. Nageshwar Rao also stated that Sanatan needs to be seen not only as an electoral symbol but also as a reflection of its values in education, health, livelihoods, governance, culture, and social life. He also emphasised the need to preserve temples and pilgrimage sites as living institutions of Indian civilisation, rather than merely as places of worship, and to foster respect, transparency, and meaningful social participation in them.
He clarified that Sanatan is not against anyone, and the party's objective is not to oppose any caste or community, but to work for all, rather than to create social divisions.
Describing Kashi as the starting point of this new political chapter, M. Nageshwar Rao stated that India's goal should be to strike a balance between modernity and its civilizational roots.
This vision has been presented by the Sarvajana Sanatan Party as its comprehensive vision: "Modern India, with its Sanatan civilizational roots."
